While the classic G&T will always have a place in our hearts, sometimes it’s good to shake things up. This spring, it’s all about the W&T – that’s a whisky and tonic. Sounds wild, right? Well, it’s actually deliciously refreshing.
We recently covered how the W&T made its way from trendy Melbourne to London bars, but why not try this on-trend drink in the comfort of your own home – and impress even the most discerning of house guests in the process?
Starward’s Left-Field, crafted by a Melbourne-based drinks brand with the W&T in mind, is currently on sale at Waitrose with a tasty discount. Down to £25 from £35, you can try the trend for less.
The brand also comes with some very impressive credentials. In 2022, Starward was named the Most Awarded Distillery of the Year in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, which is regarded as the most competitive international spirit competition in the world.
You may have spotted this snazzy whisky brand in some of London’s top drinking haunts, too, including Oriole and London’s American Bar at the Savoy.
So what can we expect from the flavour profile? Left-Field is a light whisky with notes of tropical fruits alongside juicy red fruits thanks to the red wine barrel maturation process.
It’s these bright and bold notes that complement the quinine in tonic water perfectly, balancing and rounding out the flavour.
Founder of Melbourne-based whisky distillery Starward David Vitale tells us: ‘Coming from Australia, we aren’t bound by the same rules as Old World whisky, although I have to admit even we were quite taken aback and delighted by how well our Left-Field whisky pairs with tonic water.
‘For the best pour, we recommend adding 30ml of Left-Field to ice, topping with tonic water and adding a wedge of pink grapefruit.’
Vitale also explains how the popularity of the W&T can be partially attributed to the demand for lower alcohol options, explaining: ‘The trend towards lower-alcohol drinks boomed during the pandemic and we believe it’s a consumer shift that’s here to stay.
“The Left-Field and tonic is the perfect refreshing new spin on whisky drinking and we’re always delighted to hear about people who previously weren’t big whisky drinkers enjoying this new serve.’
Left-Field is on offer in Waitrose from 15th March 2023 to 9th May 2023 at £25 700ml (usual price £25).
You can find out more and purchase Left-Field on the Waitrose website.
