Truth about Gogglebox stars’ feud
Former Gogglebox star Angie Kent has opened up about her infamous run-in with former castmate Di Kershaw, who once gave a withering verdict on Kent’s various reality TV gigs.
And it seems there are no hard feelings after Kershaw sadly passed away last week, with Kent labelling the late Gogglebox star a “queen” despite having “been on the back end” of her biting wit.
The surprise feud started back in 2020 after Kent and friend Yvie Jones had left Gogglebox Australia to pursue other media opportunities.
For Kent, that meant a busy period in a number of other reality shows: I’m A Celebrity, The Bachelorette and then Dancing With The Stars.
It also meant she was prime fodder for her fellow Goggleboxers – one of whom was not impressed.
“[She was on] Gogglebox, then went to the jungle, then she became the Bachelorette, and now she’s a dancing star,” Di said sarcastically as she and the other Gogglebox households sat down to watch Kent on DWTS.
“Spare me … She’s no dancer, that’s for sure.”
She also slammed the high scores the DWTS judges gave Kent for her performance, declaring that she should have been given a “three”. It came after Kershaw had been less than impressed with Angie’s earlier forays into reality TV.
After Di’s harsh comments made headlines, Angie hit back, writing on social media: “I have had nothing but love and support for my Gogglebox fam. So to see this not once but three times now on every adventure I’ve been on has been quite disappointing.”
In another post, Angie wrote: “I normally keep quiet when it comes to negativity surrounding what I do with MY life but this is the third time and with all the online bullying and bullying in general I think sometimes it’s not always best to keep quiet and to stick up for yourself.”
But it seems like time has healed that wound, and speaking on Nova’s Two Girls One Pod this week, Kent kept it classy as she paid tribute to her outspoken former castmate – while acknowledging their very public run-in.
“Obviously we were a part of the Gogglebox family for four years. So we just want to send all our love to her family, Mick, her children, everybody. It’s very sad,” she said.
“She was an icon. There’s not much space for older women on television. And she had such a big presence. Like she just said whatever came to her mind and sometimes it was a little bit hard to hear.
“I mean, I’ve been on the back end of it, but I loved her for it because she didn’t care. And I love it when women don’t care. And they can say what they want. So go off queen.”
Kent’s Gogglebox partner Jones agreed, calling Di “unapologetic” and “a very loved icon”.
Angie and Yvie’s tribute comes as Di’s husband of 53 years gave sad new details about her final days.
Mick, who won’t return to the program when it begins shooting next month, revealed his wife kept her throat cancer diagnosis mostly private, having been treated for nine weeks at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst before being shifted to nearby Sacred Heart Hospice, where she passed away after two weeks.
A former model, Di was also a celebrated Indigenous art dealer, receiving an Order of Australia in 2020 for her longstanding service to the visual arts.
