Trucker overtakes queue of motorway traffic because he knows the Highway Code

THIS is the moment a truck driver uses the opposite lane to overtake a huge queue of traffic while OBEYING the Highway Code and staying on the right side of the law.

Dash cam footage shows the trucker driving down a motorway before spotting a warning sign indicating that two lanes will be out of use in approximately 400 yards.

Most vehicles are in the right-hand lane, but the dash cam footage shows the trucker continuing along the inside.

As the roadwork cones start to appear up ahead, it’s probably fair to say that the trucker has time to move across, but he leaves it pretty late to filter into the right lane.

A white truck, apparently peeved at his manoeuvre, accelerates and ensures the truck driver has to pull in behind.

The trucker posted on the video: “What an absolute bell end.”

The poster @danbrake66 uploaded the video to TikTok – and has had more than 2.2million views.

He titled the video: “Traffic was bad. I was using the merge markers as per the Highway Code.”

According to the Highway Code, drivers must follow signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed.

Rule 134 states: “In congested road conditions, do not change lanes unnecessarily.

“Merging, in turn, is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed.”

However, viewers on social media are divided.

One said: “I think 99% of people would have been annoyed at you doing that. Everyone else queued.”

Another said: “This is what happens when you ignore multiple opportunities to merge safely.”

A third pointed out: “For everyone getting pressed, you’re wrong. This guy drove correctly and legally. You should merge where the lane closes, not a mile before.”
