Trip to Mansfield College, Oxford university-Tahnee Gangi Reddy-Newstead Wood School

On the 14th of November around 30 students at Newstead wood school went on a trip to Mansfield college which is a prestigous college of the university many people aspire to go too when they are older.

The day started with a presentation given to the students in a lecture room which informed them on the requirements to get into the university. They learnt that to get into Oxford you need to get above A and at least one A star in all your A-levels to get into the university. They also learnt a bit about what life was like at the university. Having seen a timetable from both a history and chemistry students day’s, they said they realised how different life at university is.

They then had a tour of Mansfeild college, they saw the kitchens, some statues, including one of Eleanor Roosevelt, and the libraries.

After lunch, they had a material sciences workshop, where they learn about solar cells, and even got to make a dye-sentisized solar cell themselves. Many of the students never even knew what material sciences were before the workshop.

Finally, they had hot chocolate and saw the natural history museum which showed things like fossils and they said it was really interesting.

“I was fascinated by all the things I saw and thought it was really informative. It has definitely given me a wider understanding of the options after sixth form” said Ileesh De Silva, who was asked about this trip.

It sounds like the children had an amazing time and they had a fascinating opportunity.
