Trip to Cambridge – Ashvika Thavaseelan, Townley Grammar School

To begin with, we discovered that Caius is the University of Cambridge’s fourth oldest College. Edmund Gonville, Rector of Terrington St Clement in Norfolk, founded the College as Gonville Hall in 1348, and John Caius refounded it as Gonville and Caius College in 1557.

The coach came to a halt, and we saw the beautiful Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge. This was well-known for being built by its entirely straight timbers, despite maintaining an arched shape, due to an unusually sophisticated engineering design.

The interiors of the building itself were ancient and sustained the aura of prestige: there were stained glass windows, huge portraits of past Kings and Queens as well as spacious rooms filled with many books neatly placed across the several shelves.

They discussed the benefits of a university and Cambridge education, informing us of what must be considered when applying and preparing for these future decisions. The presentation was interactive, and we enjoyed contributing ideas, seeing what other schools had to say, learning something new every time.

Lunch was served in the large Dining Hall and then we visited the Science Museum, which was located nearby. The specialists taught us of the historical concepts that were discovered of humanity, when technology and scientific instruments did not exist, which was simply most fascinating. There were original copies of books, including early sketches of human systems that were so advanced, intricately designed and preserved carefully within the museum.

It was a wonderful trip and definitely one that could never be forgotten.
