Trent Rockets were crowned men’s Hundred champions after beating Manchester Originals in a low-scoring thriller at Lord’s.

On a difficult pitch, the Originals posted 120-9 as Sam Cook took 4-18 and Samit Patel claimed 3-23.

The Rockets also found batting tricky and still needed 14 to win from eight balls when they slipped to 107-8.

Josh Little, Paul Walter, Tom Hartley and Matt Parkinson all took two wickets as Manchester Originals closed in on victory in the Hundred final.

But Trent Rockets captain Lewis Gregory fired his side over the line by hitting a brilliant six and another boundary, followed by a single to clinch victory with two balls remaining.

‘What a place to play,’ Gregory said. ‘To win a final here is amazing and the crowd have been fantastic tonight and throughout the whole competition.’

Manchester Originals skipper Laurie Evans added: ‘You’ve got to hand it to the Trent Rockets, they played the better cricket throughout.

‘I think we misread the pitch early on. I think all the way through we lost too many wickets and they bowled well. We just didn’t get over the line today.’

Former England bowler Steven Finn hailed Nottinghamshire all-rounder Gregory following his match-winning cameo, telling BBC Sport: ‘Under pressure that was an outstanding shot.

‘He has hit that so clean. To maintain his focus, hold his shape and time the ball to the boundary was an unbelievable piece of composure.’

Earlier in the day, Oval Invincibles successfully defended their women’s Hundred title with a comfortable victory over Southern Brave.
