Travel show host Samantha Brown has a quirky method of her own, to make sure she empties the hotel safe at the end of a stay.

In a video on her Instagram (@samanthabrowntravels) she explains how putting a shoe in her safe, along with her important belongings, jogs her memory before returning home.

She said: “When I stay at a hotel, I do use the hotel safe.

“I put my passport in there, my travel wallet with all my credit cards…and my laptop.

“And then, the most important thing I put in the hotel safe is one travel shoe.

“Believe me, you will check out of the hotel, you will go to the airport and you will forget your passport, your wallet, all of your credit cards, money, your laptop, but you will not forget to put on your travel shoes.”

The key to the trick is to put one of the shoes you will wear to the airport in the safe, ensuring you will open it before making your return journey.

A lot of people were impressed with her method, with one user saying: “That is a marvellous idea with the shoe!

“I forgot all my money once in a hotel room and only remembered when we were hours away already… and then- we had to go back.”

Another said: “I’m always so scared I’ll forget everything in there! Great tip!”

Not everyone swears by the hotel safe however – with others revealing that they might not be as secure as we think.

Safe experts have revealed how simple codes can be used to get into them.

One lock-picker showed him using the code 999999, which resets it and opens it.

Another traveller said he called the hotel reception to get into his safe, and was told to use the code 000000.

Travel website Hotels & Discounts has also said that travellers should “forget about the in-room safe” as it is one of the first places that thieves will look for items.

One family previously found this out the hard way after all of their passports were stolen when their hotel safe was ripped out of the wall.

It contained all six of their passports, around €1,500 (£1,299) in cash, a phone, a purse and credit cards.

Toni Raurich, the director of the booking platform eBooking.com, offered his advice on how to not get your stuff nicked in a hotel, including using an old shampoo bottle.

He told the Express: “Leaving valuables in the hotel is not always the safest option, especially if the hotel is of a very low category.

“For this reason, it is highly recommended to hide things inside the room itself, with the aim of not leaving all our money in sight or things of value.

“One of the most common travel tips is to hide money or jewellery in an empty shampoo bottle. In the same way, inside the suitcase itself, you can have hidden pockets where it is possible to hide larger objects.”

Toni also said that underneath the mattress is a good spot to hide things, but advised aiming for the centre of the bed rather than just putting things under the edges.

Meanwhile, a Tiktok user showed the extreme lengths she goes to to ensure no one breaks into her hotel room.

And this £1 household item could also help keep you safe in your hotel room.
