Travel: Top staycation spots as PM Boris Johnson shuns green list for UK holiday
PM Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie will stay in the UK this year, perhaps to escape the confusing traffic light system that has most Britons scratching their heads. Boris Johnson said: “I know how important holidays are to people. People think about them, they save up for them, people yearn to go abroad this year. I totally get that.”
For the Johnson family this year, the yearning is for a staycation, with an overseas holiday off the cards.
The PM will reportedly also stay at Balmoral with the Queen.
Holidaymakers who wish to follow the PM’s staycation lead are spoilt for choice, with the UK offering so many beautiful options.
Last year, the PM and his wife went on a camping trip to Scotland, and while it didn’t end so well for them, it could be the perfect staycation option for Britons not hounded by the press.

The Highlands are a firm favourite with visitors who enjoy a mix of lakes, history, whisky and outdoors.
Grant Shapps, meanwhile, has a choice between an overseas trip or a staycation in Yorkshire this year.
He insisted that he “loved Yorkshire” on Sky News this morning, so Britons will have to wait and see if this “love” extends to a staycation or if the Transport Secretary jets off to Spain or France this summer.
Good options in Yorkshire include Whitby and Scarborough, two coastal towns with sandy beaches.
DON’T MISS
One of the most popular staycation destination is Cornwall, where sea, sun and visitors can always be counted on to make one feel on holiday.
In Cornwall, TV presenter and author Fern Britton is a fan of Looe, while St Ives and Newquay should offer plenty to do to holidaying Britons.
To feel overseas without leaving England, Devon and the English Riviera are a good option.
Torquay, Paignton or Brixham tick all the summer holiday’s boxes with good weather, clear seas and Mediterranean feel.
Tenby, St Davids or Newport are all fantastic options with loads to do and access to the coast.
In the North West, a staycation in the Lake District should not disappoint, while a family holiday in Chester should delight children who can head to the zoo.
Britons this summer may opt for a staycation, following the example of PM Boris Johnson and the Queen.
