Melbourne has defended its decision to drop star ruckman Brodie Grundy ahead of Friday night’s clash against the Brisbane Lions, saying he needs “more time forward” to improve his game and support of premiership ruckman Max Gawn.
In a statement released by the club on Thursday night, Melbourne football boss Alan Richardson said the club had been “transparent” in their decision-making and did not apologise for the call to omit Grundy.
“We have been transparent that we are continuing to look for ways to be more effective in front of the ball,” Richardson said.

“We really like the impact Brodie is having in the ruck, but think he would benefit from more time forward.”
Richardson went on to further cement the club’s support of Grundy, explaining that time in the VFL will benefit the 29-year-old’s ability to contribute more in the forward half of the ground.
“To provide him with this opportunity, he will spend some time in the VFL and focus on refining his forward craft,” Richardson said.
There is no VFL game scheduled for the Demons over the weekend, meaning Grundy will be sidelined from all football duties until at least next weekend.
Melbourne have selected Jacob van Rooyen in the two-time All-Australian big man’s place, lauding his “character” when the difficult decision was made.
“To Brodie’s credit, he’s completely aligned and on board with this plan,” Richardson said.
“This is a testament to Brodie’s character and the type of person he is.”

The call comes after theories around the Demons’ drop in form made headlines, with leading AFL Journalist Caroline Wilson saying the club is experiencing a “premiership hangover” due to poor kicking and off field standards.
The Demons will look for their 11th win of the season when they face a third-placed Brisbane at the MCG in a must-win match to keep their top four hopes alive.
