Toxic ‘tragedy chanting’ slammed by league

By Damien McCartney and AP

Premier League giants Manchester United and Leeds have issued a joint statement condemning a series of back-and-forth chants from supporters during their clash at Elland Road overnight.

With scores locked coming into half-time, supporters from both sides traded grim chants.

Home supporters were first, singing about the 1958 Munich air disaster that killed 23 people – including eight Manchester United players.

Last Monday marked the 65th anniversary of the disaster. The chant also reportedly included hand gestures of planes.

In response, United fans chanted about the death of two Leeds fans killed during violence ahead of the club’s 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in Istanbul.

Shortly after full time, the clubs issued a joint statement condemning the chants.

“Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will continue to work together with our respective fan groups and the Premier League and other authorities on eradicating it from football,” the statement read.

The Premier League also issued their own statement, saying the “issue of tragedy chanting” was “a priority” and “a matter of urgency”

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford scored his 21st goal of the season as United downed Leeds 2-0.

Rashfords header on the 80 minute mark broke the deadlock, before substitute Alejandro Garnacho struck to seal the deal.

Erik ten Hag’s side are now within five points of leader Arsenal.

United had its title hopes hit by Leeds in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Wednesday, but made up for that by picking up three points at Elland Road.

Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday meant United had the chance to cut the Londoners’ lead and move into title contention.

Rashford has 13 goals in his last 15 games and is leading his team’s charge toward the top of the table.

Wout Weghorst thought he had added a third, but that goal was ruled out for offside.

The win will feed the growing belief United can mount an unlikely title challenge in a bid to be crowned English champions for the first time since 2013.
