Town Telford which is only city more expensive that London for heating and water

London is often knocked for being too expensive, and probably rightfully so, with prices in the city often higher than anywhere else, perhaps no surprise in the nation’s capital. Nonetheless this has become a particularly tough pill to swallow for Londoners as the cost of living crisis sets in, with the premium you pay for the city biting people’s wallets extra hard this year.

It may surprise you then, to find out that the town with the most expensive utility bills monthly in the UK is not London at all. In fact, the Big Smoke only clocks in second on the list, with average basic utilities of £240 per month.

Instead, topping the list compiled by utilities experts PlumbNation, is the Shropshire town of Telford, some 30 miles outside Birmingham. Clocking in at an average of £251 per month for utilities, residents of Telford pay almost £100 more than the national average, which sits at £157.

On the flipside of this, the town with the lowest average utility bills in the UK sits across the Irish Sea in Northern Ireland, with people in the city of Belfast paying on average just £70 a month for their electric, gas, and water. For those perhaps looking at where they can save the most whilst remaining close to London, Harlow in Essex also makes the top 10 lowest average utility bills at just £109, that’s less than 50 percent what you’d pay on average in the capital for a town just 30 miles outside.

The cost of living has been on the rise this year due to a number of factors including the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Brexit. Food prices for one are up more than 5 percent on the same time last year according to Statista.

What’s more, utility bills have also skyrocketed with the energy cost cap set by regulator Ofgem rising in April, and set to rise again in October, leaving consumers with bills sometimes hundreds of pounds more expensive than what they have paid in previous years.
