Toronto filmmaker Sarah Polley in talks to direct Disney’s live-action remake of ‘Bambi’

Toronto filmmaker and Oscar-winner Sarah Polley is in talks to direct a live-action remake of Disney’s “Bambi,” according to Deadline, citing multiple sources.

The project — “in very early development,” noted the publication — is a musical that will reportedly feature music by American country singer and six-time Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves.

Both Entertainment Weekly and Deadline have reported that writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster will pen the script. The pair worked together on the screenplay for the Fred Rogers biographical drama “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” in 2019.

The “Bambi” remake was first reported in early 2020. At the time, Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet were attached to write the film.

Polley’s agent declined to comment on the new reports, while Disney did not immediately respond to the Toronto Star’s request for comment.

Polley recently won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay in March for her movie “Women Talking,” based on Miriam Toews’ fact-based novel about Mennonite women discussing how to address sexual assaults within their tightly knit community. Polley was previously nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for “Away from Her.”

The original animated film “Bambi” was released by Disney in 1942. Based on the 1923 novel “Bambi: a Life in the Woods,” the movie follows the adventures of the titular deer and his two friends, Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk.
