Toni Storm has reportedly been released by WWE.

The New Zealand-born superstar – who was called up to SmackDown earlier this year and recently made her return to on-screen action – fought for the brand’s Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair on the Christmas Eve show, but has now been let go.

As reported by Fightful Select, Toni was granted her release, which it’s believed she requested herself, and it’s said she is doing ‘fine’.

The former NXT UK Women’s Champion appeared at a WWE live event on Tuesday night, and the usual reason of budget cuts was not cited as the reason for her exit in an internal memo.

The news will come as a shock to fans, particularly as Storm has been featured more prominently on SmackDown lately, having debuted on the blue brand over summer.

Among her main roster highlights this year was an appearance in the inaugural Queen’s Crown tournament as she lost in the first round to eventual winner Zelina Vega, while she also represented the show at Survivor Series.

She then began her feud with Flair, which saw them face off on a number of occasions, both in back-and-forth skits, and two singles matches.

However, the Christmas Eve match will mark her final appearance for the company following her release.

Before making the jump to SmackDown, she enjoyed success in NXT both in the US and UK having impressed en route to winning the Mae Young Classic in 2018.

Although things seemed to be looking up for Storm, she recently appeared on Out of Character with Ryan Satin and opened up about the uncertainty of life on the main roster.

‘It’s the worst cause you just don’t know. Obviously, wrestling [can be] so unpredictable. Next week you could be main eventing and winning a title and everything could be happening or nothing,’ she said.

‘You don’t know. This is show business at the end of the day. It’s a topsy turvy industry.’
