Tom Kerridge reveals energy bills at pub will soar from £60,000 to £240,000
The celebrity chef, 49, owns a group of pubs in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and one of them is expected to see a huge rise in monthly bills.
Kerridge says he is expected to have to withstand a rise from £5,000 a month in bills to £30,000 – that’s an increase of 500%.
And he is not alone, with many pubs across the land being faced with the prospect of having to close over the coming winter due to rising costs.
Many pub landlords are calling for the government to intervene before their establishments are forced to potentially shut down for good.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Kerridge said: ‘It’s just absolutely ludicrous, and that’s just us as a business.’
He continued: ‘This is every business – every business is getting quoted that because there is no price cap on business energy.’
During the interview, he also warned that many restaurants and pubs will be forced to close their doors to customers due to unaffordable bills.
He said: ‘It’s non-viable. The numbers are so ridiculous and ludicrous – no wonder so many businesses are closing or talking of closing.’
Kerridge also made the point that food and drink businesses will start to fail if the prices on their menus can’t keep up with the rising costs.
He explained: ‘Imagine if you’re buying a pint for £5, [and then] come December that pint is going to be £35. You’re not going to go out.’
‘If you’re taking the family out for a sneaky pizza on a Tuesday, that’s normally £100. If, at those restaurants, the price suddenly went to exactly the same as they’re getting quoted for their energy, your pizza is now £600.’
Metro.co.uk reported earlier this week that many typical households will be hit with average bills of almost £300 per month, totalling almost £3,600 per year.
Come January 2023, that yearly total may rise to £5,000 per calendar year, which will mean that some households will fail to keep their homes heated over winter.
Money Saving Expert’s Martin Lewis has said: ‘To get to the day of the announcement without having a firm package in place is devastating for vulnerable people, many of whom will already have mental health problems.’
Kerridge was recently forced to defend the price of the £87 steak at one of his establishments, saying: ‘If you want to ride in a Bentley, it costs money.’
