Tom Hanks confesses he has only made ‘four good movies’

Tom Hanks is one of the best-loved and most prolific actors of our generation. From Toy Story to Forrest Gump, the star has acted in almost 100 movies, but he has now revealed that he has not always been happy with them.

Most recently, Hanks starred in the Elvis Presley biopic, “Elvis”, as the King of Rock and Roll’s boss, Colonel Tom Parker – but did he like it?

Hanks bared all in a new interview while discussing writing his first novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece.

The book, which is due out on May 9, 2023, draws from experiences Hanks has had over his decades-long career in Hollywood.

During the chat, he spoke candidly about his own movies. He said: “No one knows how a movie is made – though everyone thinks they do.”

Hanks looked at his own movies, of which there are more than 80, and noted how “miraculous” film sets are, while also talking about their quality.

He said: “I’ve made a ton of movies (and four of them are pretty good, I think), and I’m still amazed at how films come together. From a flicker of an idea to the flickering image onscreen, the whole process is a miracle.”

He later added: “Movie-making is very hard work over a very long period of time that consists of so many moments of joy slapped up against an equal number of feelings of self-loathing. It is the greatest job in the world and the most confounding of labours that I know of.”

While Hanks would not name which of his films he deemed “pretty good”, it’s plain to see which he might not be proud of.

In 1999, he starred in Saving Private Ryan, where his performance has gone down in history as one of his most powerful yet.

While many of his characters have been extremely heroic over the years, it has now been revealed that he wanted to try something different for Elvis.

Hanks’ version of Colonel Tom Parker was very much the villain of the biopic by Baz Luhrmann. And the director has explained that this was an intentional choice for the Captain Phillips star.

Luhrmann said: “I sat down with him having not even written a script yet and he said: ‘Well if you want me I’m your guy.'”

Luhrmann said Hanks wanted to do a character his fanbase “wouldn’t want him to do”.

“Like all despots, Tom Parker was empathetic,” the Great Gatsby director mused. “He did love Elvis and was also exploiting the hell out of him so Tom Hanks wanted to run towards that role, he jumped at the chance to do a repugnant character.”

Elvis is available on digital download now.
