In a devastating update, Rear Adm. John Mauger of the US Coast Guard revealed on Thursday that the submersible bound for the Titanic wreckage site, which had gone missing on Sunday with five individuals on board, met a tragic fate.

According to the Coast Guard District commander Mauger, the submersible suffered a “catastrophic implosion,” resulting in the loss of all lives.

“This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the sea floor and the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel,” Mauger told reporters.

The families were immediately notified, Mauger said. “I can only imagine what this has been like for them and I hope that this discovery provides some solace during this difficult time,” he said.

Earlier, the company leading the Titan submersible trip says the five missing crew members are believed to be dead.

OceanGate Expeditions on Thursday says its pilot and chief executive Stockton Rush, along with passengers Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet “have sadly been lost.”

OceanGate did not provide details when the company announced the “loss of life” in a statement or how officials knew the crew members perished.

The vessel’s 96-hour oxygen supply likely ended early Thursday.

The company has been chronicling the Titanic’s decay and the underwater ecosystem around it via yearly voyages since 2021.

What is a catastrophic implosion?

A catastrophic implosion refers to a sudden and violent collapse of an object or structure due to an overwhelming inward force. In the context of a submersible or underwater vessel, it implies a rapid and complete failure of the structural integrity, resulting in the vessel collapsing upon itself.

This type of implosion can occur when the external pressure exerted by the surrounding water becomes too great for the vessel to withstand, leading to a sudden and catastrophic collapse of the hull or other critical components. The implosion is often accompanied by a release of energy and the scattering of debris.
