TikTok getting nostalgic with new trend
TikTok is getting nostalgic about your childhood with this trend. But some things from the 90s have been completely changed.
If there’s one thing the internet loves above all else, it’s a little nostalgia.
Particularly with the world being so dreary, there’s nothing that brings purer joy than being reminded of the jelly sandals I wore every day like a Queen as child.
Rewatching Round The Twist is literally what got me through Sydney’s second lockdown — and made me question rating standards.
So it’s not surprising that TikTok has jumped on a nostalgic trend, #backintheday, and it’s a wholesome trip down memory lane.
I could honestly talk about these all day, but instead I’ll pick a few that sparked joy. Like this reminder of the jelly sandal’s big sister, the (usually Disney) princess plastic heel that I thought was fun for about two minutes before chucking them away:
This Zooper Dooper one didn’t quite make sense to me — because surely these still exist for us as adults — until I read the comments, and searched Woolies, only to discover that the packaging lost it’s Transformer-like robots, and they’ve changed the packaging so no one slices their mouth corners while sucking on an icypole anymore. Which technically is a good thing, but still, how else are you meant to know you’re alive?
OK excuse me, but why do kids TV shows insist on changing the animation? Just check out what they did to Bob The Builder. I feel the exact same way about Bananas In Pyjamas and Pingu — that cheeky penguin doesn’t need to talk.
Remember Paddle Pop stick competitions, where you ate way more Rainbow Paddle Pops than you ever cared to just on the slim chance you won a holiday to Hawaii?
And the rainbow parachute that gave everyone hours of entertainment in primary school? Especially if you were lucky enough to get to run around under it. Those were the days.
Let me just leave you with one more that pretty much dumps my entire primary experience into one TikTok. Remember those wooden cubes and blocks they used to make you do maths with? Neither did I, until I watched this.
Those were the days.
