Tigers secretly contact axed coach as Plan B emerges

The Tigers’ internal battle has taken a new twist the club showing interest in sacked Titans coach Justin Holbrook through a third party.

With the club at the foot of the NRL ladder and coaches Tim Sheens and Benji Marshall at odds with management, the Tigers are a club very much in crisis.

The interest in Holbrook is three-fold – he could add experience and knowledge as an assistant coach, he could step in if the relationship between Sheens, Marshall and the board becomes untenable… and he is a way of signing Titans star Tino Fa’asuamaleaui.

The Maroons superstar is close to Holbrook – so much so that he had a clause inserted into his current contract that if Holbrook left, Tino is free to walk as well.

The big forward is now assessing his options, with several clubs besides the Tigers keen on his services.

David Fifita is in the same situation but both will wait until later in the year before making any decision on their futures.

JETS WAITING IN THE WINGS

Newtown’s bid to be re-instated to the big league via Perth after 40 years has gone quiet – but is still bubbling away in the background.

Jets officials know that their preferred option – coming back as their old selves at Henson Park – is not realistic in the current climate.

But they are keeping a close eye on developments of the Perth bid to become the NRL’s 18th franchise.

“We are keeping our powder dry,” Jets chairman Barry Cotter told Wide World of Sports.

“We want to see exactly who we are dealing with over there and don’t want to give up the Newtown brand which is so iconic.

“A return via Perth – with a few games back at Henson – would be a great result for our many fans.”

HOW WARRIORS SIGNED SURPRISE PACKET

Speedy five-eighth Luke Metcalf is proving one of the buys of the year for the Warriors – but it is almost the signing that never was.

Metcalf, who bagged two tries in the 46-10 win over the Eels last weekend and looked very sharp, wanted to stay at the Sharks to be close to his family and friends.

A mere $200,000 would have kept him at Cronulla but the club decided to show faith in veteran pivot Matt Moylan, who is nearing the end of his career.

Metcalf is proving a great foil for Shaun Johnson as the Warriors ramp up their bid to confound the critics by making the finals.

CLEVER CLAUSE FOR RAIDERS

Some Raiders fans weren’t happy when the club released promising halfback Brad Schneider to English Super League Club Hull KR last week.

But all is not lost, Raiders supporters.

I’m hearing that if the Raiders suffer an injury in the halves in the next couple of months, there is an agreement that Schneider can come back to the club for the finals.

The 22-year-old, who has played international football for Germany, has played a dozen top grade games for Canberra since making his debut in 2021 and looks the goods.
