Tigers season rocked by double-injury blow

The Wests Tigers 2023 season looks set to go from bad to worse, with confirmation one star’s season is all but over, while another will face a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Injuries to Brent Naden and Adam Doueihi came within minutes of each other as the Tigers looked to mount a comeback against the Eels, before eventually falling short 28-22.

First it was Naden who went down with a suspected broken collarbone, sustained as he scored the Tigers’ third of the day just after the hour mark.

Cameras captured Naden clutching at his shoulder immediately after scoring, with replays showing the centre landing heavily on it.

Barely minutes later, the Tigers’ injury woes deepened in a nightmare incident.

With a comeback charge against the Eels in full swing, Doueihi made a great take off a short Clint Gutherson dropout. As he landed however, something in his left knee could visibly be seen giving out.

The Tigers half immediately went to ground and was helped from the field. After the match, coach Tim Sheens revealed club doctors suspected a second ACL injury.

Doueihi’s 2018 season at South Sydney was ended by an ACL injury to the same knee.

Earlier in the day, the club’s depth took a hit when young winger Jordan Hill suffered his second ACL injury playing for the Tigers’ feeder club, Western Suburbs Magpies in the NSW Cup.

“Not a good day for us in that regard,” a deflated-looking Tim Sheens said after the match.

Former Tiger Mitch Moses almost single-handedly led the Eels to victory, setting up three tries from kicks and a fourth from a long pass to Maika Sivo on the wing.

“Three tries from kicks, his goal kicking – hitting the posts and going in all that sort of thing. When it’s your day, it’s your day isn’t it,” Sheens said.
