Tigers recruit in trouble for ‘dangerous’ tackle

Wests Tigers recruit Jackson Hastings has drawn the ire of NRL officials after performing a lifting tackle in his side’s clash with the Knights.

The five-eighth picked up Newcastle’s Tex Hoy by the legs and tilted him into a near-vertical position in the 13th minute.

The Knights utility didn’t land on his head but referee Ben Cummins nonetheless placed Hastings on report and awarded Newcastle a penalty.

“That’s a dangerous one, that’s not a good one,” said Nine commentator Mat Thompson.

The tackle sparked an all-in scuffle described by Roosters and Panthers legend Brad Fittler as “a restless couple of seconds”.

Hastings’ tackle will be assessed by the match review committee and, unless the report is scrapped, a grading will be determined on Monday.

Hastings is back in the NRL this year after spending four seasons in the Super League, where he played with Salford and Wigan.

Hastings had played in the NRL with the Roosters and Manly before departing for England.
