Thousands of Carer’s Allowance claimants to get extra £245 this week

The payment, called the Carer’s Allowance Supplement, will be received by Carer’s Allowance claimants in Scotland and is paid for by Social Security Scotland. Carer’s Allowance, however, is paid for by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Scottish carers who receive their Carer’s Allowance payment on a qualifying date receive the Carer’s Allowance Supplement twice a year.

The next payment of the Carer’s Allowance Supplement will be this Friday, December 9, 2022.

People will receive the payment of £245.70 if they were paid Carer’s Allowance on October 10, 2022.

The next Carer’s Supplement payment is due to be paid in June 2023 and people will get this payment if they receive Carer’s Allowance on April 10, 2023.

Social Security Scotland will announce the exact date for the June payment closer to the time.

According to official figures by Social Security Scotland, 81,680 Carer’s Allowance Supplement payments were made in June this year.

If people are eligible for the payment, then they will receive a letter from Social Security Scotland before the payment is made.

To get Carer’s Allowance Supplement people must live in Scotland on a particular date or have a “genuine link” to Scotland alongside getting the payment on a particular date.

Social Security Scotland also noted the person someone cares for does not have to live in Scotland for someone to get the £245.

DON’T MISS:

According to Social Security Scotland, the DWP shares information with them so they can make this payment.

In order to claim Carer’s Allowance, people must be caring for someone else for at least 35 hours a week, be over the age of 16 years and not earn more than £132 a week from employment or self-employment after tax and National Insurance.

Britons can only claim the allowance if the person they care for claims one of the qualifying disability benefits.

These benefits are Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or child DLA, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Armed Forces Independence Payment.

From April 2023, weekly Carer’s Allowance payments will increase by £7.05 to £76.75.

This could see eligible claimants receive up to £3,991 a year, which is around £332 a month.

Recent figures by the DWP revealed around 1.3 million people claim Carer’s Allowance in the UK and it is estimated that nearly half a million people are not claiming the benefit when they could be eligible.

Before someone makes a claim for Carer’s Allowance, they should make sure that they have their National Insurance number, bank or building society details and employment details if they’re working or their P45 if they’ve recently finished working.

People will also need to supply details of expenses they have. According to the DWP, expenses include things such as pension contributions or the cost of caring for a child or disabled person while they’re at work.

Those who are studying will have to provide their course details in their application.

Currently, it takes around six weeks to receive a response from the DWP about a claim and if successful, someone could be able to backdate their claim for around three months.
