Thor’s Hammer Recreated an Iconic Avengers MCU Moment With Captain America

When Thor and Captain America need to speak it takes Mjolnir and an awe-inspiring show of force to get the discussion started.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thor #15 by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, Matt Wilson, & VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.

Throughout the current run of Thor, the Avenger has struggled to maintain control of Mjolnir. Now the King of Asgard, Thor is trying to figure out who he is and what defines his new role. His uncertainty is underlined by a disconnect from his signature weapon. Thor has defined himself as being the only one “worthy” to wield his enchanted hammer Mjolnir, but things have changed. At times, he has found the hammer difficult to lift, while others can move it with ease.

Thor #15 brought the struggle to a head when Mjolnir pushed Thor to the ground and trapped him there. He remained helpless until Loki lifted the hammer from his chest. Seeking out council to his problem, Thor traveled to Earth to speak with Steve Rogers. When the Odinson arrived, the Avengers were in the middle of a fight against a swarm of killer cyber monsters. As the Asgardian attempted to speak with Captain America, the ongoing battle interfered. The Asgardian took out the opposition with a thunderous show of power but it wasn’t until Mjolnir hit Captain America’s shield that Thor caught the other man’s attention. This is very similar to an iconic scene between the two heroes in the first Avengers film.

When 2012’s The Avengers was released, most of the superheroes of the MCU had not yet interacted. The film was a way to bring all of them together and form a team that could protect the planet against the raw power of the Tessaract and the god of mischief, Loki. Transporting Loki to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, Captain America and Iron Man were overtaken by Thor who was looking to take his brother back to Asgard. The heroes would not let Loki get away without punishment so the three comic book icons battled it out. While Iron Man and Thor battle it out, Captain America arrived to try and finish things.

The Captain told the Asgardian warrior that they could discuss their issues civilly if Thor would “put the hammer down.” In an ultimate power move, Thor slammed his hammer down onto Captain America’s vibranium shield. The force of the two mighty weapons clashing emitted a shockwave out that flattened the surrounding forest. After seeing what their squabbling unleashed, the men finally agreed to talk. Now, a similar scene has played out in the latest issue of Thor. This time around was slightly different, however, as the King of Asgard needed to talk to his old friend while Steve was preoccupied with a battle. Again, the only way to talk was to first create an impressive explosion. In the calm after the storm, they finally had a moment to talk.

Although Thor no longer feels he is the one who should wield the hammer, there is still an obvious connection between the Asgardian and the enchanted weapon. When Mjolnir crashed onto the shield, it was not of Thor’s doing. The hammer felt that Thor had to talk to Steve and it grabbed the man’s attention in the fastest way possible.

Mjolnir demonstrated a deep connection to Thor, sensing how important it was for the Asgardian King to have an audience with Rogers. Even though Thor may be king, and no longer the “spear” of Asgard, Mjolnir will always be an important part of him.
