No cocktail’s popularity has had quite as quick an ascension as the espresso martini.
The after-dinner tipple or beginning-of-the-night pick-me-up dominates drinks menus, and is evidently one of the most popular choices.
But while people will always have a love for a classic, we’re all ears for exciting new takes – particularly if we can try them at home.
Our interest has been piqued with Mr Black’s limited-edition Coconuts! Rum and Coffee Liqueur (£35) which is taking espresso martinis to a whole new tropical level, with shoppers calling it ‘better than Tia Maria’.
A big call.
After the success of their 2021 barrel-rested collaboration, Mr Black and Bundaberg, two innovative, artisan Aussie distilleries, have joined forces again for a second seasonal release.
The brand new flavour is a blend of Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, Bundaberg Small Batch Reserve Rum and fruity coconuts, making it right on trend for the warmer months.
‘This is the opposite, it’s tropical fun in a bottle. Chill it, sip it, mix it with coke, or shake up an Espresso Martini. It’s delicious no matter how you drink it,’ so says Mr Black Founder, Tom Baker.
‘We’ve really upped the rum in this year’s edition. Between the coconuts and coffee there’s a lot of flavours competing for your attention, yet it’s still incredibly well balanced.’
While this flavour only dropped this month, shoppers were impressed with the original, with one writing on Amazon: ‘Brought for hubby birthday, he says it is better than Tia-Maria. It’s not as sweet as Tia Maria but it has lots of great coffee flavour.’
The new offering can be prepared on the rocks, or as part of what may be the drink of the season – a coconut espresso martini.
Mr Black has put together a recipe that calls for 30ml of Mr Black Coconuts! Rum and Coffee Liqueur, 30ml of rum and 30ml of espresso, before you shake together with ice and garnish with coconut flakes or coffee beans.
And the funky bottle design?
A product of Mr Black’s long-time partnership with Brooklyn creative studio The Young Jerks, which will make for a great vase or ornamental piece once the drink is finished, if that’s your interior vibe.
