This is the best time to do your evening skincare routine

When you’re on top of your skincare routine you feel great but often – especially when you’re tired or overwhelmed – it’s easy to let it slip.

But even when we are in control and completing a three to four step skincare routine every night without fail, it’s usually the last thing we do before our head hits the pillow.

Let’s face it, who hasn’t moisturised their face, half asleep, in bed?

But according to experts, we’ve been doing it all wrong.

Kimberley Hulme, the head of clinic at Face the Future, says you need around two hours between the time you complete your evening skincare and the time you hit the hay.

This is so you have enough time for your products to absorb into your skin.

‘It takes time for your skincare to sink into your skin and hopping straight into bed after applying your multi-step evening routine is a recipe for disaster,’ says Kimberly.

‘At a minimum, you should be looking to carry out your full skincare routine at least two hours before bed to allow all your products plenty of time to be absorbed before you place your head on your pillow.

‘This will help to prevent any product from being transferred onto your bedsheets and wasted.’

She adds that there is no real reason to do your skincare routine right before bed, especially if you’re just sitting at home and relaxing.

‘As soon as you’ve finished cooking dinner and are getting ready to relax for the rest of the evening, you should be starting to think about getting your skincare sorted,’ she says.

‘Doing your skincare earlier in the night is not only a great way to unwind but is one of the simplest ways to ensure that you are getting the best results out of your routine.’
