There’s nothing worse than finding a guilty pleasure snack that always hits the spot, only to discover it’s been discontinued.
It usually feels like a complete oversight. After all, how could something so scrumptious be taken off the shelves for us never to taste again?
Long-lost food crushes are something many of us deal with when cravings strike.
But there are some discontinued items that Brits just can’t stop thinking about, and the top five most-missed snacks have now been revealed.
Claiming the top spot is Milky Way Crispy Rolls, which left UK supermarket shelves only last year and are missed by 39% of Brits.
The recent discontinuation of the chocolate wafer snack dismayed many UK chocolate lovers, with a Mars spokesperson announcing the rolls were now in ‘a galaxy far, far away’.
Fans even took to Twitter to share their heartbreak at the announcement, with one saying: ‘Week ruined nobody talk to me.’
Coming in second place in the nationwide survey by AEG was the Cadbury Dream.
The creamy white chocolate bar clearly made a lasting impression, as the last time it was seen on supermarket shelves was back in 2002.
Despite being discontinued for a lack of popularity, the treat still seems to have a loyal legion of fans with 31% of Brits wishing it was still available.
Facebook went wild in 2020 when shoppers found the Cadbury Dream in a B&M store, but unfortunately it no longer seems to be available – back to dreaming it is.
Voted the third most popular discontinued item was Galaxy’s Truffle Celebrations.
After being removed from the famous sharing box back in 2011, they are still dearly missed.
One Twitter user commented: ‘Justice for the Galaxy Truffle, objectively the best Celebration, taken from us too soon.’
But, no matter how loved they were, apparently the mini Twix which replaced them proved even more popular – so the 25% of the British population that pine for the Galaxy Truffle will never get their favourite back.
In fourth spot was White Maltesers, with 21% of respondents wishing to taste these white chocolate biscuit balls once more.
The product was discontinued in 2014 after an 11-year run due to a lack of sales, and although Mars has since released white chocolate Maltesers Truffles, the updated confections just don’t hit the same spot for many.
One very upset White Maltesers fan who took to Twitter to express her upset said: ‘@MaltesersUK you are a grave disappointment for discontinuing those delicious balls of goodness. BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! – you’ve made half of the UK severely gutted.’
Last but not least, the Mars Delight chocolate bar was ranked the fifth most-missed treat to be taken away from our lives.
Making its exit from shops in 2008, the snack is still wanted by many Brits.
The crispy wafer surrounded by caramel cream was such a favourite that a petition to bring it back garnered 6000 signatures, but sadly the effort wasn’t successful.
In fact, up until recently, Mars Delight held the title of ‘most-missed’, receiving getting more than 8,600 searches a month from Brits hoping to get their mitts on the nostalgic snack.
Although it didn’t make the top five, we’d like to draw attention to an additional honourable mention from the survey: the infamous Turkey Twizzlers. Talk about a meaty blast from the past.
The controversial Bernard Matthews product was a treat for the taste buds, but was discontinued and banned from schools in 2005 after chef Jamie Oliver raised health concerns.
Since then, thousands called for the nation’s most missed dinner time staple to be brought back, so the recipe changed and the ‘new and improved’ Turkey Twizzlers hit the shelves in 2020.
The updated version had double the meat content and almost half the calories.
But while they might be better for us, nothing beats the nostalgia of the original.
