Sorry to thumbs up emoji fans but it seems the younger generation thinks of it a bit differently to their elders.

While it started life as a humble symbol of agreement or a job well done, now the thumbs up emoji has a more sarcastic, passive-aggressive, and even confrontational tone to Gen Z.

And according to one poll, it also tops the list of emojis only old people use.

The poll, referenced by MailOnline, asked 2,000 16-29-year-olds their emoji opinions and found that 24% think that the thumbs up is past it, followed by the red heart (22%) and the OK hand (20%).

The tick and the happy poop came in at 17% and the sobbing face followed closely behind at 16%.

Then comes the see no evil monkey (15%) the clapping hands (10%), the lipstick kiss mark (10%), and the grimacing face (9%).

The ten emojis that only ‘old’ people use

  1. Thumbs up ????
  2. Red heart ❤️
  3. Ok hand ????
  4. Check mark ✔️
  5. Poo -????
  6. Loudly Crying Face ????
  7. Monkey eye cover ????
  8. Clappy hands ????
  9. Kiss mark ????
  10. Grimacing Face????

As for how young people feel about the thumbs up in particular?

In a Reddit thread on the subject, one 24-year-old wrote that it should ‘never [be] used in any situation’ because it’s ‘hurtful’.

They added: ‘No one my age in the office does it, but the Gen X people always do it.

‘Took me a bit to adjust and get [it] out of my head that it means they’re mad at me.’

This poll also mirrors another one from last year which found strikingly similar results – so it seems these emoji attitudes are going anywhere any time soon.
