The X-Men’s Darkest Future Proves Why Mutants And Humans Need Each Other

By informing humans of the dangers that come from their use of technology, mutants could end their war with humanity before it even begins.

Although it’s rarely addressed by the majority of Marvel’s non-mutant heroes, the conflict between humanity and mutant-kind is one of the most pervasive and destructive forces in the Marvel Universe. As shown in the many apocalyptic futures that the X-Men have found themselves traveling to or from over the years, the fear and hatred that exist between Earth’s two dominant species has the potential to spiral into a worldwide race war that only ends when one of the two species rules over or exterminates the other.

When Moira MacTaggert’s betrayal of Krakoa creates yet another dystopian future, history appears to repeat itself when the Wolverine of that future travels back in time in an attempt to prevent his future from coming to pass. However, this Wolverine decides to break from tradition in X Deaths of Wolverine #4 (by Benjamin Percy, Federico Vicentini, Dijjo Lima, and VC’s Cory Petit) by revealing that mutant-kind and humanity share a common enemy, potentially paving the way for a future where humans and mutants stand united against a force that wishes to wipe them both out.

In the aftermath of Inferno, Moira went from being one of the X-Men’s closest allies to one of their most dangerous enemies, merging with a fragment of the techno-organic Phalanx Collective and vowing a dangerous vendetta against all of mutant-kind. When Moira’s success in one possible future resulted in almost all life on Earth being absorbed by the Phalanx’s hive-mind, the Wolverine of that timeline travels back in time to the past to kill her.

Although he wasn’t trying to offer a solution to the conflict between humanity and mutant-kind, Wolverine’s warning about the threat that machines pose to humans and mutants raised an interesting possibility regarding one of the core themes that has defined Jonathan’s Hickman’s relaunch of the X-Men franchise. When Hickman took over the X-Men back in 2019, one of the concepts that he established was that mutant-kind’s true enemies aren’t humanity but the machinery they create in an attempt to control the environment around them.

Unfortunately, these machines, particularly the mutant-hunting Sentinels, usually end up betraying their creators and seizing control of the Earth. In their haste to save themselves, mutant-kind has engaged in an evolutionary arms race with humanity, with mutants rushing to establish themselves as an intergalactic power while anti-mutant human factions like Orchis struggle to create machines that can keep up with Krakoa’s unique plant-based technology.

Orchis and other factions like them have continued to build Sentinels, completely blinded by their fear of mutants to see the danger they’re putting themselves in. By re-directing the attention of the modern human vs. mutant conflict towards the source of mutant’s fear, Wolverine presents an interesting solution to the problem. By informing humans of the dangers that come from their use of technology, mutants could end their war with humanity before it even begins.

Despite their insistence that humans are their enemies, mutants have refused to consider the idea that humans could simply be ignorant of the consequences of their unchecked technological advancements. By communicating with humans and laying out the risks of their current path, Krakoa could not only prevent the seemingly-inevitable war that spurred the country’s existence but also rebuild their fractured relationship with humanity.
