The X-Men’s C-List Inventor Is Secretly One of Marvel’s Most Dangerous Mutants
Sabretooth #2 highlights how dangerous a relatively obscure ally of the X-Men can be when he uses his powers to fight off Wolverine’s deadly nemesis.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sabretooth #2, now on sale from Marvel Comics.
The vast scope of the X-Men’s supporting cast means that there are literally hundreds of mutants on the sidelines, waiting for chance to be spotlighted in current stories. This includes the relatively minor character Madison Jeffries, an Alpha Flight veteran and genius who has just proven to be one of Krakoa’s most potentially deadly mutants.
The X-Men C-list character uses his powers against the typically unstoppable Victor Creed in Sabretooth #2 (by Victor LaValle, Leonard Kirk, Rain Beredo, and VC’s Cory Petit), demonstrating in horrific fashion just how dangerous he can be.
Debuting in Alpha Flight #1 (by John Byrne), Madison Jeffries has been a minor figure in the X-Men’s world for years. After serving as a member of the Canadian superhero team and contending with the machinations of Weapon X, Jeffries became one of the relative handful of mutants to retain their powers after M-Day. He then joined Utopia as a member of Beast’s scientifically-minded X-Club, and served as technical support for the X-Men and their allies. While his expertise and ability to control machines make him crucial behind the scenes, Jeffries is also a very dangerous mutant, possessing the power to manipulate or alter any inorganic material at will, allowing him to morph and manipulate various items and substances at will.
Jeffries’ power is substantial enough to affect items that are even microscopic in nature, giving him access to one of Krakoa’s most lethal surprise attacks. After being imprisoned within Krakoa for breaking one of the mutant nation’s fundamental laws, Jeffries and a few of his fellow mutants are confronted by the vicious Wolverine villain Sabretooth. Already bitter for having been trapped within Krakoa, Sabretooth implies that he intends to murder the newcomers for fun. But Jeffries notes with sadistic satisfaction that human beings as a whole have a tendency to consume substances such as microplastics, meaning countless pieces of inorganic material are floating within everyone’s body. At that point, Jeffries used his powers to transform all the plastic in Sabretooth’s body, leading to a series of spikes erupting from within his body.
The attack is painful enough to stun the normally unflappable killer, and it gives the other mutants the chance to escalate their attack against him, eventually defeating the feral mutant. Madison may not be one of the X-Men’s most popular mutants, but his encounter with Sabretooth is a reminder of just how dangerous he can be. Using his powers in a similar manner against humans without healing factors, Madison could theoretically fatally wound anyone by simply transforming the microplastics within them in a way similar to what he does here. This could even theoretically make Jeffries a counter to powerful characters such as Wolverine.
Jeffries’ abilities quietly make him one of the most dangerous mutants on Krakoa, especially when coupled with an intellect that has even impressed the likes of Hank McCoy. It’s a good thing he’s never become ambitious or cruel enough to use that application of his power on others, as it would transform him into one of Krakoa’s most lethal figures.
