The world’s deadliest tourist activity named and it’s ‘surprisingly dangerous’

While the majority of holidays are trouble-free, travelling is never without risk. A new ranking from the team at Nomadic Yak has found the most dangerous holiday activities in 2023.

Although some of the most dangerous activities might only be joined by the most extreme adventure travellers, others are fairly common.

Harry Dale, founder of Nomadic Yak, said: “I hope this study reminds travellers that many of the adventure sports we consider perilous are extremely safe.

“Many of the holiday activities that we consider commonplace can actually be surprisingly dangerous.”

British tourists should always make sure their insurance policy covers them for any activity they might be doing on holiday.

Mountain climbing was the most dangerous tourist activity on the list with the highest percentage of incidents recorded.

The world’s deadliest mountain is Annapurna I in Nepal although even mountains in Europe can be deadly. There are around 100 deaths a year on Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps.

Cave diving also ranked among the most dangerous activities with a one in 3,333 fatality rate.

Although the risks are still low, tourists taking part in extreme activities should ensure they’ve had the proper training and use a reputable tour operator.

Driving rounded off the top three. It’s very common to rent a car on holiday but tourists should make sure they’re familiar with the rules of the road in their destination.

Horse riding also ranked in the top five while paragliding was one of the world’s deadliest tourist activities.

The running of the bulls festival in Pamplona in Spain might be a popular tourist event but it’s also extremely dangerous and there are often injuries.

Binge drinking and food poisoning landed just outside the top 10 while jet skiing also ranked among the most dangerous activities.
