The Wilson’s Rubik’s Cube Competition – Edwin John, Wilson’s School
On the 26th and 27th of January, the Wilson’s Rubik’s Cube Competition took place across all year groups with the KS3 category being on Wednesday and the KS4 and KS5 category happening on Thursday.
After a ten-second scrambling, competitors were to solve the Rubik’s Cube five times and an average of their three middle times were taken to obtain their final result.
Every participant received a house point for their entry and those who were successful in their respective category received more, giving their house a better chance of winning the overall house competition at the end of the year.
This house competition was introduced this year alongside other prevalent competitions that already occur on a yearly basis, such as House Music (which is currently ongoing from the 31st January to the 4th February) and House Chess.
It was well received as Ewan Ferguson, a Year 11 competing in the KS4 and KS5 category, offers his thoughts on the event:
“I think it was a good idea, but was very informal. Lots of rules that apply in [official] competitions weren’t present and I feel that all years should be competing in the same competition instead of being divided.”
Ewan is proficient at ‘speedcubing’ (a term referring to solving a Rubik’s Cube as quickly as possible through analysis, memorisation of algorithms, and carefully-planned movements) and has been doing so since Year Four – aiming to improve, achieving better times.
In the competition, he averaged approximately 22 seconds with a best time of 21 seconds – though unfortunately he was beaten by a Sixth-former whose best time was approximately 15 seconds.
Though a very new introduction to the house competitions, the Wilson’s Rubik’s Cube Competition has gained traction and shall hopefully became an annual event, perhaps with more official rules next time to evolve it from the humble but enjoyable opportunity it was this year.
