The Watson whisper that’s got Johns ‘worrying’

Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns says it’s “worrying” that Knights utility Connor Watson reportedly signed with the Roosters for less money and on a shorter deal.

The legendary Newcastle halfback also says “it’s disappointing as a former Knights player”, after Watson penned a two-year deal with the Tricolours worth a reported $300,000 per year.

Watson finalised a deal that will reunite him with the Roosters after this season, despite the Knights reportedly presenting a three-year contract worth $350,000 a year.

“If the rumours are true, that he’s signed for the Roosters for less money, it’s worrying,” Johns told Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.

“Connor is so versatile, he can play any position, I mean any position, from fullback to front row, he’s that perfect 14 jersey which is so important.

“So personally, I’m really disappointed he’s leaving the Knights.”

Watson spent his first two seasons in the NRL with the Roosters, playing under coach Trent Robinson in 2016 and 2017.

But he’s been at the Knights ever since, racking up 62 games in four years and bouncing back from an injury-plagued 2020 to carve out an impressive 2021.

“I know he loves living up there,” Johns said.

“He lives with Kalyn (Ponga), obviously.

“And he’s very popular amongst the fans. And that’s important in Newcastle; you have the connection between the club and the fans.

“And on the field, I think he’s been Newcastle’s most consistent player. I think he’s found his niche playing in the middle of the field with the quicker ruck and the six-to-go. I think he’s been one of the Knights’ best.

“It’s disappointing as a former Knights player (that Watson is leaving).”
