The Ted Lasso quote giving Wallabies hope

Wallabies flanker Fraser McReight has outlined how his struggling team plans to turn things around against the All Blacks in a fortnight at the MCG.

“We have a week off now so we have a few days to get away and refresh. We debrief on our own before coming back together as a group,” McReight said on Stan Sport when asked how the team can rebound in the Bledisloe Cup.

“We have to scrap the past two games and learn from our mistakes but move on quickly. As Ted Lasso says, ‘be a goldfish’.”

Australia is now 0-2 under Eddie Jones 2.0 after slumping to an upset 34-31 loss against Michael Cheika’s Argentina in Parramatta.

“In 10 days we could be a completely different team and that is the aim,” Jones said ahead of the clash with the red hot All Blacks, 2-0 in the Rugby Championship after beating the Pumas in Mendoza and the Springboks in Auckland.

Wallabies captain James Slipper was keeping it real after Australia lost consecutive games against Argentina for the first time.

“Performances like that, we won’t go far at the World Cup,” Slipper said.

But Wallabies legend Tim Horan could see light at the end of the tunnel.

“As Eddie mentioned, there are four or five players like Quade Cooper coming back, Rob Leota, Angus Bell came back tonight,” Horan said.

“They are key players and of course you look at others who have played for Australia A, like Taniela Tupou. I think they are going along the road and they are not far off.

“But big test is the All Blacks.”

All Blacks coach Ian Foster was understandably delighted by Saturday’s 35-20 victory over the world champion Springboks.

“Just the way we climbed through some ebbs and flows in the game,” Foster said.

“They’re a quality team and we obviously stung them at the start with the tempo we were able to play. I thought our desire to play on top of them early was there and we got good reward for it.

“But they came back. We’ve spoken before about defending leads, and they had a lot of experience on their bench in that third quarter. But I thought we rowed through that, so it’s a good step for us.”
