Along with neck pillows, eye masks and a good book, there could be a new long-haul essential to add to your carry-on bag.

That’s because a new study has found a certain food could be the answer to beating jet lag.

A new study, by Australian airline Qantas and the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, has found that chocolate can help reduce the impact of jet lag and could make you feel a whole less groggy during a flight.

The airline has been testing different lighting, sleep schedules and mealtimes on volunteers to see how they can improve the experience for passengers on long-haul flights – ahead of its non-stop route from London to Sydney.

Along with chilli, chocolate has been named as an ingredient that could help passengers, so is likely to be on the menu as part of the airline’s new ‘anti-jet lag measures’.

During the research, experts also adjusted the timing of when meals were served, to try and align the body clock ‘by using specific menu items including fish and chicken paired with fast-acting carbohydrates, as well as comfort foods like soups and milk-based desserts.’

Researchers said they were looking to promote the brain’s production of the amino acid tryptophan – which is commonly found in chocolate – to help passengers drift off more easily.

Peter Cistulli, the professor of sleep medicine at the University of Sydney, said while the research was ongoing there were ‘clear signs’ that the different elements helped reduce the impact of long-haul flights.
