The Simpsons fans call out continuity error as character returns after 33 years
Jacques, a bowling instructor, first appeared in the very first season back in 1990, and was played by actor Albert Brooks.
Marge, angry with Homer after he buys himself a bowling ball for her birthday, promises to learn how to bowl herself in order to spite him.
While at the bowling alley, she meets Jacques, who attempts to pursue an affair with her, only for Marge to turn him down towards the end of the episode.
Jacques made further cameo appearances, including in The Simpsons Movie, but Albert Brooks never returned to play him or voice any lines of dialogue.
However, Sunday night’s (March 19) season 34 episode, Pin Gal, saw Marge return to the bowling alley and Jacques return to the show for the first time in 33 years.
In the episode, Homer discovers his local bowling alley is closing down, so he enlists Marge’s help in the hopes that they can keep the Bowlerama in business.
To help hone her skills, Homer hires Jacques, not knowing about the French instructor’s history with Marge.
However, eagle-eyed fans of The Simpsons caught the show out after realising that Homer did find out about Marge’s almost-affair back in 1994.
In the season six episode Another Simpsons Clip Show, Marge recalls the time she was almost tempted by Jacques, telling the story to Homer.
Homer then tells Marge about the time he almost engaged in an affair with co-worker Mindy in the season five episode The Last Temptation of Homer.
One viewer said: ‘I don’t know if I like the idea of The Simpsons basically retconning Marge telling Homer how she almost cheated on him with Jacques.’
Another commented: ‘Marge and Homer shared their moments of “almost-affairs” with each other. Homer already learned about Jacques. I know there’s a flexibility with canon but… c’mon!’
However, other fans of the show pointed out that The Simpsons often acknowledges, and deliberately includes, continuity errors to keep fans on their toes.
Elsewhere in the episode, Moe’s Tavern had an update with writer Al Jean asking fans if they spotted which item had been removed.
