The sign in a person’s smell recognised as a symptom of cancer

Any tumour that grows in the nasal cavity, the space behind the nose, or the sinuses – the small air-filled cavities inside the nose – can lead to a change in your sense of smell.

According to the NHS, one of the “most common” symptoms of nasal and sinus cancer is a “decreased sense of smell”.

An additional symptom can include a blocked nose, only affecting one side, that doesn’t go away.

Another is nosebleeds, or bloody mucus running from one nose, or mucus draining into the back of the nose and throat.

While these symptoms can be similar to a cold, at a later stage, the tumour can lead to persistent pain or numbness in the face.

A cancerous tumour could also lead to swollen glands in the neck, a partial loss of vision, or double vision.

Cancer of the nasal and sinus capacity could also lead to a bulging eye, a consistent watering eye, or pain and pressure in one ear.

Also take note if you experience a persistent lump or growth on your face, nose, or roof of the mouth.

Any unusual or persistent symptom should be checked over by a medical doctor.

Macmillan Cancer Support pointed out the risk factors for developing nasal and sinus cancer.

People whose profession involves breathing in formaldehyde, wood dust and leather dust are more at risk of the disease.

As are smokers, or those who have caught high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV).

Cancer Research UK says: “Survival depends on different factors. So no one can tell you exactly how long you will live.

“Your outcome depends on the stage of the cancer when it was diagnosed. This means how big it is and whether it has spread.”

The longer cancer is left to grow, the bigger the tumour becomes, and the more deadly it may be.

Thus, if you experience any troublesome and persistent symptoms (not only of the signs listed above) then you should book a doctor’s appointment.
