The seaside town that’s a nightmare to get to but might have UK’s best beach

The UK’s best beach has been crowned – but getting there represents a challenge for budding tourists.

Par Beach on St Martin’s, one of the Isles of Scilly, has been described as the UK’s answer to the Caribbean after being ranked as the best beach to visit in the country.

Naming it the best beach in the country, The Telegraph’s Chris Leadbeater wrote: “I tripped over it during the pandemic, in that time when we were all meant to be discovering our own country.

“And it did feel like a discovery, as I approached by water – and found myself staring besotted at this largely unadorned crescent, with its little jetty and handful of rowing boats.

“Here was the social distancing we were meant to seek in the Covid days – but during my couple of hours next to that beach, the world’s worries felt very far away.”

But getting there from London can be a nightmare.

Visitors will need to head to Penzance and take a boat from the harbour.

This would entail travelling for several hours on a Great Western Railway train, or an around six hour drive from the capital to the coastal town.

But the beach itself might just make it all worth it.

Par is known for its stunning natural beauty.

The island features pristine white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and breathtaking coastal scenery.

The area offers fantastic opportunities for beachcombing, swimming, snorkelling and wildlife spotting, reports MyLondon.

The beach has five stars from a handful of Google Reviews, with one person writing: “Stunning beach on a stunning Island.

“Crystal clear calm water perfect location to watch the seals, picnic and relax. Great for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.”

Nearby St Martin’s Vineyard also offers a great way to take in the views from afar. They run self-guided tours and wine tastings for just £10, and have received rave reviews.

One person said: “We went on the self guided tour of the Vineyard and participated with the wine tasting.

“Both were fantastic, really recommend a visit here; the tour was really informative and the tasting a real pleasure – thank you!”

The Isles of Scilly are also a great spot for bird watchers, as well as lovers of other animals.

Par is home to a diverse range of bird species, including rare and migratory birds.

Puffins, seals, dolphins and other marine life can all be found on the island.

It also comes complete with a fantastic history, including ancient archaeological sites, aged buildings and the remains of a Bronze Age village.
