The Power Rangers’ Most Dangerous Ally is Also Their Last Hope

In Mighty Morphin #17, the Power Rangers have finally found the help they desperately need in the form of their most dangerous ally.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Mighty Morphin #17, available now from Boom! Studios.

The Power Rangers have taken on a number of incredible threats in their decades long history, and overcoming the Eltarian invasion and the Empyreals was their greatest victory yet. Unfortunately, the fight also cost the heroes their Command Center, as well as much of their hometown. Thankfully, the Rangers still have a few capable allies who are willing to help them get back on their feet, including Grace Sterling of Promethea, who also happens to be their most dangerous ally.

The Power Rangers finally have an opportunity to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives now that the battle is over. In addition to dealing with the loss of Zordon’s energy chamber in the attack on their Command Center, the heroes also have to find a way to protect their connection to the Morphin Grid itself. Promethea fared much better in the assault on Angel Grove, making the organization the perfect place for the Rangers to ask for help. As seen in Mighty Morphin #17 (by Mat Groom, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire), Grace Sterling is happy to protect the Rangers’ Power Chamber and offer what service she can when it comes to helping the heroes replace their home. Billy is understandably skeptical about accepting her help, especially considering the fact that Grace’s empire is built on stolen alien technology and a pirated connection to the Morphin Grid. The Ranger rightly questions her true motives in helping them, especially in light of the fact that there are no imminent threats besieging the planet.

First introduced in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #17, Grace Sterling has always had a complicated relationship with the Power Rangers, or more specifically Zordon. As a member of his original Rangers in 1969, Grace knows full well the responsibility that comes with the powers they have been given. She also knows what bad leadership and closely held secrets can do in terms of damage, as she was one of the few survivors of her team’s very first mission after Zordon failed to inform them of the true danger they were facing. Upon returning to Earth and confronting her mentor, Grace was stripped of her powers. This betrayal drove her to found Promethea, and the organization has become second only to the Rangers in terms of protecting the world from alien threats. With Billy Cranston’s help, Grace was even able to transform Matthew Cook into her very own Green Ranger, complete with an updated version of his iconic Megazord.

Of course, none of this would have been possible if not for the resources Grace stole for herself in the name of saving the world. And after the latest attack on Earth, she and her organization aren’t doing much better than the Rangers. It doesn’t make sense for her to work with the Rangers, but it may be her best option, at least for the time being. She allied with the Rangers in order to defend the world from the worst attack it had ever seen, and proving that a relationship with the team could be mutually beneficial. Issues of trust still plague both parties, but if that could be overcome a union between the Power Rangers and Promethea could usher in a bold new era for everyone involved.

However, it is still hard to imagine that Grace isn’t still keeping some things close to her vest. She understands the power of a well-guarded secret, and she is not prone to easily relinquishing power.

Still, Grace has exhibited a real desire to protect the world at all costs, and it is possible that she sees an alliance with the Rangers as the most astute option for doing so. It is quite possible that she will use this opportunity to mend fences with Zordon and the Rangers, putting aside her grievances in service of doing what is undoubtedly in the best interests of the world.
