The positions, roster changes and games that could undermine the Jets’ season
The Jets are done with training camp, done with the preseason and their roster has been cut down to 53. There is still a little more tinkering to come, but we have a good idea of what the 2022 Jets will look like when they take the field at 1 p.m. on Sept. 11 to open the season against the Ravens.
There are plenty of reasons for optimism after the team added talent in the offseason through free agency and the draft. The roster is better than it has been in years. Still, it is hard to see this club competing for a playoff spot this season. It feels like they are a year away from being a potential contender.
Here are the five biggest issues in my eyes as the Jets season begins:
Quarterbacks
It looks almost certain that Joe Flacco will begin the season as the starting quarterback. Flacco has had some good moments this summer but his recent track record is not inspiring. Flacco’s teams have lost 14 of the last 16 games he has started, dating back to 2018. He did not look good in the final preseason game against the Giants, and the Ravens surely are going to throw a lot at him.
