The pandemic changed my best friend – she lives in fear
DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE Covid, my best friend is a shadow of herself.
She was always the life and soul of the party but is now too anxious to leave her home.
We are both 67 and have been friends for more than 40 years. I’ve seen her go through so much – divorce, bereavement, miscarriage – and she always came out the other side stronger. But the pandemic has destroyed her confidence.
For the past three years, she has been terrified of catching Covid and dying.
No amount of reassurance eases her fears. She has given up her social life and I feel so sad for her.
Get in touch with the Dear Deidre team
Every problem gets a personal reply from one of our trained counsellors.
Fill out and submit our easy-to-use and confidential form and the Dear Deidre team will get back to you.
You can also send a private message on the DearDeidreOfficial Facebook page.
She will only meet me in the park, wearing masks and walking far apart.
I feel she is wasting her life and I want to help her.
What can I do?
DEIDRE SAYS: The pandemic has left a legacy of anxiety and uncertainty.
Seeing a friend struggle, and feeling powerless to help, is so difficult.
My support pack, Living With Anxiety, will be helpful for you both to read.
Encourage her to make an appointment with her GP, as there may be some medication or counselling that can help.
She can also contact anxietyuk.org.uk (03444 775 774) and speak to someone in confidence.
Do keep talking to your friend, letting her know you are there for her.
