The new Mercedes-AMG C 63 has lost its V8 – but now has F1 tech and crazy power

MERCEDES-AMG is known around the world for making cars go fast, usually with a raucous V8 or V12 engine.

The Mercedes-AMG C 63 has long been associated with V8 power, but it’s all-change as Mercedes is forced to go Green.

However, while a V8 rumble is no longer a thing, don’t go thinking the AMG C 63 has lost its punch.

Not only is this new model the quickest C 63 ever, it also has the world’s most powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.

That petrol engine, combined with a powerful F1-tech battery and electric motor, makes an incredible 680hp – more than many supercars.

Despite the C 63 now weighing 2.1 tonnes, that allows 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 174mph with the right options ticked.

Handily, upgraded AMG composite brakes come as standard to help you scrub off speed just as quickly.

All that power reaches the road via a nine-speed automatic gearbox and clever all-wheel drive which can be told to send more power to the rear wheels in Drift Mode.

The list of tech that has been fitted to make sure the C 63 as quick around corners as it is in a straight line is mind-boggling.

There are now EIGHT drive mode settings that alter things like adaptive dampers, rear-wheel steering, the steering feel, throttle response and how savage the gearbox is.

These settings also decide the blend of petrol and electric driving – although the new C 63 can only be driven up to 8 miles on electricity alone, as the focus is on electricity helping the engine produce more power.

Now known as the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance, this powerful plug-in hybrid is being offered as a saloon or estate.

The standard Mercedes C-Class has been given a beefed-up design to become the C 63, with bulging arches, more aggressive front and rear bumper designs and larger alloy wheels.

Inside you’ll find figure-hugging sports seats, an AMG multifunction sports steering wheel and Merc’s latest twin-screen digital dial and infotainment system.

There are no confirmed size figures, but the estate C 63 will offer a more practical boot for those who need it.

Mercedes is also yet to confirm prices for the new C 63, but its supercar power will probably come with a supercar price.

Expect prices to start north of £80,000 and continue well beyond £100,000 once a few option boxes are ticked.
