The Masked Singer UK: Michael Owen shocked by reaction amid stint as Doughnuts
During Saturday’s double elimination, judges Mo Gilligan, Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, and viewers at home finally saw actress Jaime Winstone as Firework and the former professional football player as Doughnuts.
The England ace, 42, admitted he ‘surprised himself’ by taking part, explaining that he wouldn’t have had the ‘courage’ to go on stage without the elaborate costume.
Despite feeling the nerves beforehand, Michael expressed the love and support shared on Twitter has made him look at things from a different perspective.
‘I’ve been in a line of work for many years where it can be a toxic place on social media,’ he told Metro.co.uk and other press.
‘I think it’s been the most positive I’ve seen on social media.’
Michael also revealed his personal relationship with social media used to be non-existent, due to the endless amount of trolling he would see.
‘If you’re talking about football, you’re always going to offend somebody, it just doesn’t make sense,’ he added.
‘However, this show, following the tweets and the Instagram posts that I’ve put out, and I never normally read the nice comments. I started reading and I literally couldn’t get to the bottom of them. I didn’t read one negative comment.
‘It has made me view the world a lot differently because you can’t help but see the horrible stuff that comes to you all day, every day.’
While fans are guessing which celebrities are behind Robobunny, Traffic Cone, Panda, Mushroom, and Rockhopper, Michael has a pretty good idea on who might win.
‘I think Mushroom is a great singer. Mushroom is the best if not one of the best singers in there,’ he said.
‘If it’s a singing contest, I think she – well presuming it’s a she – would have a really good chance, so I’d go for Mushroom as the winner.’
Earlier in the series, the fourth contestant to be unveiled was Bagpipes, who was revealed to be tennis legend Pat Cash.
The third star revealed was Lionfish, who was singer Will Young, with Gloria Hunniford unveiled as the Snow Leopard – and Heather Small unmasked as Chandelier.
The Masked Singer continues next Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
