The Last of Us: Nick Offerman On Why He Played Bill Despite Having Packed Schedule, Showrunner Teases Emotional Joel Moment
Nick Offerman is known for his role as Ron Swanson in the sitcom Parks and Recreation. He also plays Bill in HBO’s The Last of Us, and on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he talked about his character and why he decided to take on the role.
In the series, Bill is a survivalist who takes care of an isolated fortress with his partner Frank. The character appeared in episode 3 of the series (review of the episode here) with Frank, and Offerman explained that he was hesitant to take on the role first. However, what convinced him was his wife Megan Mullally, who read the script and told him to do the show.
Offerman revealed, “That guy seems to know what he’s doing, and he sent me this script and I didn’t have time on the calendar to say yes to this job, and my incredible goddess of a wife read it and she said, ‘You’re going to Calgary, buddy. Have fun. You have to do this.’”

The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin teases emotional Joel moment
The recent episode has many wondering about Joel’s past life. Co-creator and executive producer Craig Mazin has said that while the show will not explore the character’s in detail, it will have an impact on his future.
Throughout the first two episodes of the series, both Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Tess (played by Anna Torv) have referenced Joel’s past. There was also a flashback scene in the first episode where he recalls the night his daughter Sarah was killed.
Mazin however told TV Line that Pascal’s portrayal of Joel is full of soul, humanity, and vulnerability, especially when he is alone. Joel has to maintain a tough exterior around others, but when he is by himself, his true emotions shine through.
