The Justice League Invites [SPOILER] to Join the Team & Gets Shot Down HARD

The Justice League just tried to recruit a classic hero to their team, but the hero shoots them down hard when they refuse his one request.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Blue and Gold #1, on sale now

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold have been longtime friends in the DC Universe, with their close-knit bond serving them well during their time on and off the Justice League. Since Ted’s restoration following his apparent demise in Dark Nights: Death Metal, the pair have even been actively fighting together again, with their latest series opening with the duo even proving capable enough to save the entire Justice League from capture. Bu

t that doesn’t mean both of them are strictly Justice League material, as Blue Beetle discovers — with the team wanting to break up the pairing and only offer one of them a spot on the roster.

In Blue & Gold #1 by Dan Jurgens, Ryan Sook, & Rob Leigh, Booster quickly rushes into battle against a mysterious alien menace, who has already captured the rest of the Justice League. Live-streaming the entire fight, Booster quickly finds himself overwhelmed — resulting in Skeets calling upon Blue Beetle for assistance. Arriving on the scene, Ted Kord’s technical knowledge is able to get them into the spaceship containing the rest of the League. And while Booster distracts the sentries defending the team, Blue Beetle is able to breach the technological defenses and free the Justice League just before the ship was set to teleport across the galaxy. The team quickly escapes, even saving Booster in the process.

Afterwards, Booster Gold — fully confident they’re about to be invited to join the new roster for the Justice League — goes to clear some of the debris alongside Black Adam. This gives the League the chance to speak with Blue Beetle in private. The entire team is in agreement that they want Kord as a full-time member of the group, with his technical expertise making him a potentially key asset of the group. However, the team also reveals they have no interest at all in recruiting Booster Gold, with many of their members considering him “irritating” and “obnoxious.” Blue Beetle refuses to join the group without Booster Gold, arguing that the pair work best as a team.

Notable, Kord doesn’t inform Booster of this, instead telling him the Justice League weren’t interested in either of them. The pair decide to continue working together, unaware they’ve caught the ire of Princess Omnizon, the force behind the attempted capture of the Justice League. Proclaiming her intention to return to Earth and wipe out the “pests” that interfered with her attempt, it’s clear that Booster Gold and Blue Beetle could probably use some hard-hitting help from the likes of the Justice League. But Blue Beetle — in his rash defense of his best friend — may have burned that bridge a bit more than he intended.

Blue Beetle’s commitment to his friend is also a testament to his loyalty — especially because it’s hinted throughout the issue that Kord has actually lost most of his supplies and much of his fortune in recent months. This could complicate their plans to offer heroic assistance to anyone who calls upon them, and leave them underprepared if  Omnizon returns to Earth before Blue Beetle can restock his supplies. Having Justice League funding and support would make that significantly easier for Kord — but life has never exactly been kind to the trouble-making best friends, and it looks like it will continue that trend at least a little longer. But despite the efforts of their fellow heroes to entice Blue Beetle away, at least Booster and Beetle still have each other to rely on in the coming conflicts.
