One place they could find hidden beaches with sea pools for “amazing” wild swimming is tunnels beach in Ilfracombe, Devon.

A network of tunnels that were hand-carved in the early nineteenth century, leads to several sheltered sand and shingle beaches, as well as a Victorian tidal swimming pool.

According to Niche Museums, hundreds of Welsh miners were hired for a two-year project, which saw them carve six tunnels through the cliffs to providing access to the coastline by foot or carriage.

Outdoor bathing pools were also segregated by gender to “protect the modesty of the ladies”.

Niche Museums also claim that a bugle player was positioned “between the male and female pools, who would blow an alarm if any man attempted to spy on the ladies, resulting in his arrest”.

There is no other way to reach the beaches than by going through the tunnels, with a small entrance fee, making it feel somewhat like a secret bay.

One person who loves the Ilfracombe spot is Tiktoker CJ (@cjexplores), who described it as “one of a kind”.

In a video shared online, they said: “Located in Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast, Tunnels Beach is one of a kind.

“Did you know there’s a UK beach that you can only access via a network of 19th century tunnels?

“Welcome to Tunnels Beach, a beautiful haven that you can only visit via hand-carved tunnels created in the 1820s.

“The magic doesn’t stop there, though, because once you reach the beach, you’ll find an incredible sea pool, which makes for an amazing wild swim experience.”

Their video has been seen more than 600,000 times, with others impressed with the beach.
