The importance of languages by Ashvika Thavaseelan – Townley Grammar School
The more you utilise your brain to master new skills, the better it works. Learning a new language forces your brain to become acquainted with new grammatical and lexical norms. It trains your memory to remember new words, draw connections between them, and apply them in context. Learning a new language additionally enhances your creativity. With a larger vocabulary, you’ll be able to express yourself and interact with people more effectively. Similarly, you’ll think faster, read more effectively, and gain increased confidence in your ability to acquire new things. In addition, studying a third or fourth language becomes easier because you will already be familiar with all of the necessary techniques, discipline, and approaches.
During the lockdown, my brother and I enrolled in a Tamil school and began learning Tamil, one of the world’s oldest languages with a rich history dating back thousands of years. ‘I have learned so much about Tamil culture in the last three years,’ Ahash (my brother) said, but what he has most loved is being able to ‘understand and explore Tamil music, Tamil films, and gain a deeper knowledge of my family background.’ This new skill that we are embracing every day has transformed the way we see ourselves and has opened up a broader spectrum of options for us to acquire other skills and learn new things.
Now you know why learning a second language is beneficial, begin your journey today!
