The Handmaid’s Tale confirms season 6 will be its last
The dystopic drama, based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, landed on our screens in 2017 and was met with widespread acclaim.
Starring Elisabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes, the Hulu series follows Elisabeth’s character June Osborne as she fights for survival in a world where women are forced to repopulate the world through sexual servitude to men and their wives.
Ahead of season 5, which premiere next week, the makers confirmed the series about a totalitarian regime had been renewed for a sixth season and will conclude.
Bruce Miller, creator, showrunner and executive producer, said in a statement: ‘It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
‘We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.’
In the latest instalment of The Handmaid’s Tale, June will face consequences for killing Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose.
Meanwhile, his devastated widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) seeks revenge for her husband’s murder as she steers Gilead’s influence into Canada.
Two trailers for the penultimate series of The Handmaid’s Tale have dropped, teasing fans about the explosive feud brewing between June and Serena.
In one nail-biting scene, June takes up arms when she asserts: ‘You want a fight? Let’s fight,’ as she appears to have her finger on the trigger of a gun while crossing paths with her foe.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 airs from September 14 in the US on Hulu.
