The Great’s cast have teased the future of the show and a possible season 4
Fans of the historical comedy-drama The Great can breathe a sigh of relief after the show made a recent comeback to streaming platform Lionsgate+ yesterday (July 14).
Season three of The Great marks a new era in the tumultuous marriage of Catherine the Great (played by Elle Fanning) and her wayward husband Peter III of Russia (Nicholas Hoult) after the couple came to blows at the end of the last series.
Although season three may have just landed for British viewers, the show has already aired in America on Hulu and many fans are curious to know if there will be more from the irreverent and mostly historically inaccurate drama.
Will there be a season 4 of The Great?
In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Archie actor Adam Godley said: “We’re all waiting to hear, we don’t know yet. That’s all I can say. Fingers crossed.”
Godley, 58, went on to address the secret to the show’s success: “I think [creator] Tony [McNamara’s] genius – and you saw this with The Favourite that movie that he did just before The Great – is that on some sort deep, crazy, creative and human level, he understands that we are all a bundle of contradictions. That’s what it is to be human.”
He said the cast had “fantastic” material to work with, which would see performances veering from “hugely emotional” to “bordering on farce”.
Godley explained: “The series exists just at the point where those two things collide.
“So, I think that’s a huge amount of what the success of the series is and the people that enjoy that really enjoy that. He takes that to the max.”
The Umbrella Academy and Lodge 49 star said the other aspect of The Great which made it a success was being an expensive, high production costume drama with an anarchic “wicked, comedic spin” to it, subverting expectations.
Adding: “I think it’s a delicious combination of things.”
Charity Wakefield, who is better known as Georgina Dymova, also opened up about a possible season four of The Great.
She told Express.co.uk: “It’s quite possibly happening but I wouldn’t know about it – I don’t know.
“I just genuinely don’t know. I wish that I did, we’re waiting.”
The Sense and Sensibility star, 42, elaborated: “Normally, it’s the case that it comes out on air and then there’s deciding and when things might happen.
“They haven’t said anything but I would love to do [more].
“I think there was always a hope that we would make four and that would be an arc and there would be a resolution within a four-series arc for Catherine.”
