The ‘first symptom’ of cholesterol build-up could strike in your buttocks

High cholesterol means you have too much of a fatty substance coursing through your bloodstream.

Over time, the pesky substance can increase your risk of serious health problems, ranging from heart disease to stroke, therefore it’s imperative to keep it in check.

While high cholesterol doesn’t usually show many symptoms, some warning signs may appear once it builds up in your arteries.

Cholesterol accumulation in this area also promotes plaque growth, which describes a cocktail of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin.

Once your blood vessels house too much of this mixture, they become hard and narrow.

This process, known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), can produce the “first” symptom that often strikes in your buttocks, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The warning sign of PAD is usually an uncomfortable sensation known as intermittent claudication.

Claudication describes muscle pain that occurs when you’re active and stops when you rest.

According to the health portal, pain, cramping and discomfort can help you spot intermittent claudication.

These uncomfortable sensations can either strike in your buttocks or your legs.

They usually strike when you’re active and go away when you’re resting.

Apart from these three sensations, PAD can eventually trigger the following symptoms:

  • A burning or aching pain in your feet and toes while resting, especially at night while lying flat
  • Cool skin on your feet
  • Redness or other colour changes in your skin
  • More frequent infections
  • Toe and foot sores that don’t heal.

Unfortunately, PAD doesn’t always trigger many noticeable symptoms which makes it hard to identify, similarly to high cholesterol.

Therefore, the most reliable way of determining your levels of the fatty substance is through a blood test.
