The Expanse: Dragon Tooth Comic Picks Up Where the TV Series Left Off

The Expanse fans definitely know what it’s like to be left wanting. Even though the critically acclaimed TV series was saved from cancellation and went on to enjoy another three seasons on Prime Video, many have bemoaned the fact that Amazon didn’t keep the story going even longer. But there is a silver lining. The show’s story is continuing on in a new form thanks to BOOM! Studios.

IGN can exclusively reveal the first details about The Expanse: Dragon Tooth, a new 12-issue limited series set after the show’s final season. Dragon Tooth is written by Green Arrow: Year One’s Andy Diggle and drawn by Voltron: Legendary Defender’s Rubine. Christian Ward (Black Bolt) is handling the main covers for each issue, and the series will also feature variant covers from artists like Jung-Geun Yoon (Something is Killing the Children), E.M. Gist (Star Wars) Salvador Larroca (Doctor Doom).

As mentioned, Dragon Tooth is set after the events of the show’s finale, meaning it’ll reveal the fates of many characters and answer some of the lingering questions not addressed in Season 6. Interestingly, the comic also seems aimed directly at fans of the novels, as it’s set in the lengthy time gap separating Book 6, Babylon’s Ashes, and Book 7, Persepolis Rising.

“It’s not often you get to work on something you already love with your whole heart, and everyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about The Expanse,” said Diggle in Boom’s press release. “Suit up and strap in — we’re gonna be pulling some high-g maneuvers!”

“It is a real honor for me to participate in this project. The Expanse is a spectacular sci-fi story, authentic, and superbly done. But it is also an existential portrait of the course of humanity. How, unfortunately, we constantly repeat the same mistakes of the past. And how only by getting rid of grudges and prejudices can we forge ahead as a society,” said Rubine. “With what’s happening nowadays, it’s an important message to get across. I hope you enjoy this comic as much as Andy and I are enjoying working on it. Andy has prepared a brilliant story faithful to the series, full of plot twists, intrigue, humanity, and a lot of heart. Travel with us in the Rocinante!”

The Expanse: Dragon Tooth #1 will hit stores in April 2023.

Update: Boom has also launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Expanse: Dragon Tooth, which features variant editions of the comic and other collectibles not being offered at retail.

The Expanse franchise is finding new life in other areas, as well. Telltale Games and Deck Nine are collaborating on The Expanse: The Telltale Series, a new adventure game that acts as a prequel to the TV series. It’s one of the many big games hitting in 2023.
