The Deaths of Two Buffy Fan-Favorites Reveals a Horrifying New Mystery
The deaths of two Buffy the Vampire Slayer icons could hold the key to saving the world from the eternal darkness that it has been shrouded in.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #2, available now from Boom! Studios.
While Buffy Summers has been battling the forces of evil for almost three decades as the Slayer, she has never had to do so on her own. Apart from hunting vampires under the dutiful eye of Watchers such as Rupert Giles, Buffy has almost always had her friends in the Scooby Gang to rely on. Unfortunately, in the dark future of Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer, the rest of the original Scoobies are nowhere to be found. Even worse, the truth about Willow and Tara’s deaths has just unveiled a conspiracy that might hold the secrets to saving the world.
Buffy had never expected that the world would take the vampiric turn it did, yet the appearance of the young woman claiming to be a Slayer has been even more surprising. Not only that, Thessaly also happens to be the daughter of Willow and Tara, two of Buffy’s oldest friends and most invaluable allies. There might be no one better to train Thessaly in slaying vampires than Buffy, though that doesn’t explain why they have sent their daughter to seek out the Slayer on her own. As it turns out, the only reason Willow and Tara didn’t join Thessaly is because they are no longer alive. Not only that, but their deaths had everything to do with undoing the vampire threat once and for all by reigniting the sun itself.
As revealed in Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #2 by Casey Gilly, Joe Jaro, Joana Lafuente, and Ed Dukeshire, the deaths of Willow and Tara came after the two experienced witches and their coven came within reach of setting the sun alight once again. Despite how devastating the loss of such iconic and endearing characters is, their assassination only speaks to how far the vampires in power are willing to go in securing their place at the top of the food chain. That the vampire regime has been keeping its eyes on people of interest isn’t especially shocking on its own, rather it is the fact that they took out an entire coven so quickly that sends the story for an intriguing turn. If the vampires were so afraid of what Willow and Tara were capable of, that would seem to confirm that there is in fact some way of returning the world to the way it once was. Buffy may not want to believe that there is still a war worth fighting, but all the signs she has received recently would imply otherwise.
On the other hand, without Willow, Tara, or even the likes of Buffy’s former Watcher Giles around, there may not be anyone left who is capable of the same sort of mystical feats that Buffy’s old friends made look easy. Thessaly could easily be the key to bringing the sun’s light back to Earth considering her magical heritage and status as a Potential Slayer, although even her powerful magic as it has been seen so far is nowhere near the sort of power necessary to end the vampire threat in one fell swoop. With any luck, Buffy and Thessaly won’t prove to be the only ones left to carry on Willow and Tara’s legacy. And, if they are, here is hoping they actually stand a chance.
